Recipe: Funny 404 page copy generator
Generate witty, on-brand 404 messages that turn a dead end into a memorable moment.
Ingredients
- 1 brand voice doc (tone, slang, forbidden words)
- 3–5 inside jokes or product quirks your users know
- 1 short CTA (e.g. “Go home” or “Search”)
- Optional: 1 emoji or ASCII art that fits your vibe
Steps
- Pick a theme. Choose from: lost-in-space, dog-ate-my-page, time-travel-glitch, or overly-polite-butler.
- Write the headline. Keep it under 50 characters. Make it rhyme or pun if your brand allows.
- Add a one-liner. Acknowledge the error without blaming the user. Self-deprecation wins.
- Insert the inside joke. Drop a reference only your power users will catch.
- Place the CTA. One link, no more. Make it the obvious next step.
- Test with 3 real users. If nobody smirks, iterate the headline.
Example output
404 — Page not found
We looked everywhere. Even under the server rack.
Maybe it's in the upside-down. Maybe it never existed.
