Research grant application outline
A structured template for crafting compelling research grant proposals. Follow this outline to maximize your chances of securing funding.
1. Executive Summary
One-page overview covering the problem, your hypothesis, methodology, expected impact, and funding request. Write this last but place it first.
2. Problem Statement
Define the gap in knowledge or practice. Cite key literature. Explain why this problem matters now and who benefits from solving it.
3. Research Objectives
List 3–5 specific, measurable objectives. Each objective should map directly to a deliverable in your timeline.
4. Methodology
Detail your experimental design, data collection methods, sample size justification, and statistical analysis plan. Include contingency plans for high-risk steps.
5. Timeline & Budget
Gantt chart or phased breakdown across the grant period. Budget table with personnel, equipment, consumables, travel, and indirect costs. Justify every line item.
6. Team & Capabilities
Biosketches for PI and co-investigators. Highlight relevant publications, prior funding, and institutional resources available to support the work.
Pro tip: Tailor the language of each section to match the funding agency's stated priorities. Reviewers score against their own criteria, not yours.
