Recipe SEO Strategy

A primer on ranking recipe content in 2026 — structured data, content depth, and the signals that move the needle.

1. Structured Data Is Table Stakes

Google pulls rich results from JSON-LD. Every recipe page needs Recipe schema with name, image, prepTime, cookTime, nutrition, and aggregateRating. Validate with the Rich Results Test. Without it, you are invisible in the recipe carousel.

2. Content Depth Wins

Thin recipe cards do not rank. Google's helpful content system rewards pages that demonstrate first-hand expertise. Include step-by-step photos, ingredient substitutions, equipment notes, and storage instructions. Answer the questions users ask after they cook.

3. Technical Hygiene

  • Core Web Vitals — LCP under 2.5s, INP under 200ms on mobile.
  • Canonical URLs — one authoritative URL per recipe.
  • BreadcrumbList schema — reinforces site architecture.
  • Alt text on every process image — descriptive, keyword-aware, not stuffed.

4. Internal Linking Architecture

Cluster recipes by cuisine, ingredient, or dietary tag. Every recipe should link to 3–5 related recipes and its parent category hub. Hub pages rank for broader terms and pass equity down.
