Funnel Chart Design

Funnel charts visualize progressive drop-off through sequential stages. Each bar narrows proportionally to the value it represents, making conversion bottlenecks immediately visible.

Structure

A funnel is built from stacked trapezoid layers. The top layer is widest; each subsequent layer shrinks relative to its predecessor. Labels sit to the left or right, with absolute values and step-to-step conversion percentages.

Usage

  • Limit to 4–7 stages to avoid visual clutter.
  • Always show raw counts alongside percentages.
  • Use consistent horizontal spacing between layers.
  • Animate width transitions on data change for live dashboards.

Funnel charts pair well with segmented bar charts and Sankey diagrams for multi-path analysis. Keep tooltips lightweight and avoid 3D effects that distort proportion perception.
