Panel discussion moderation prep
A structured workflow for moderators preparing to lead high-stakes panel conversations. Covers research, question design, and live facilitation tactics.
Ingredients
- Panelist bios, recent interviews, and social footprint
- Topic brief with 3–5 core tension points
- Opening question and 2 follow-ups per panelist
- Timeboxed run-of-show (60 or 90 min)
- Backup bridging phrases for dead air
Steps
- Map each panelist's known positions on the topic; flag likely friction points.
- Draft an opening question that surfaces disagreement without forcing conflict.
- Build a question matrix: one column per panelist, rows for opening / deep-dive / closing.
- Rehearse transitions aloud; time each segment and trim ruthlessly.
- Prepare 3 redirect phrases to reclaim the floor from a dominating voice.
- Print a one-page cheat sheet with names, key quotes, and time cues.
Live tips
- Open with a specific, not abstract, question.
- Use names to draw quieter panelists in.
- Never repeat an answer; pivot or probe instead.
- Watch the clock — protect the closing segment.
