Local SEO Primer

Everything you need to rank your business in local search results — from Google Business Profile to citation consistency.

What Is Local SEO?

Local SEO is the practice of optimizing your online presence so your business appears in geographically relevant searches. When someone types “coffee shop near me” or “plumber in Austin,” local SEO determines whether you show up in the map pack and organic results.

The Three Pillars

  • Proximity — How close your business is to the searcher. You cannot control this directly, but you can target specific neighborhoods with location pages.
  • Relevance — How well your Google Business Profile matches the query. Use precise categories, attributes, and keyword-rich descriptions.
  • Prominence — How well-known your business is online. Reviews, backlinks, and consistent NAP (Name, Address, Phone) citations build prominence.

Google Business Profile Essentials

Claim and verify your profile. Fill out every field: hours, services, attributes, Q&A, and photos. Post weekly updates. Respond to every review — positive and negative — within 24 hours. Use the product and service catalog features if applicable.

Citation Consistency

Your NAP must be identical across every directory, social profile, and data aggregator. Even minor discrepancies — “St.” vs “Street” — dilute trust signals. Audit your citations quarterly using tools like BrightLocal or Whitespark.

Review Velocity

A steady stream of fresh reviews signals relevance. Create a simple ask process: send a follow-up email or SMS with a direct review link 48 hours after purchase. Never incentivize reviews — it violates Google's guidelines and can trigger a penalty.

On-Page Signals

Embed a Google Map on your contact page. Include your city and neighborhood in title tags, H1s, and body copy. Use LocalBusiness schema markup. Create unique location pages for each service area with genuine, non-duplicate content.
